Objectives and Background

Based on the belief that the language of the people is the essence of that people, the Joint Board of South and North Korea for the Compilation of Gyeoremal-keunsajeon strives to advance and reunify Korean-speaking community by compiling unified Korean language dictionary and henceforth reviving spoken and written words Korean people in the Peninsula and overseas share.

The Joint Project to compile Gyeoremal-keunsajeon was first initiated by Reverend Moon, Ik-hwan at his visit to Pyongyang in 1989. The written agreement was finally signed between Preparing Toward One Korea from South Korea and Minjok Hwahae Hyupeuhoe from North Korea on the 5th of April in 2004.
The project officially launched with the opening ceremony on the 20th of February in 2005, attended by members of the Joint Compilation Committee in Mt. Geumgang.
Spoken and written words are the cultural life of humankind. Humans have created and developed diverse cultures and communities through languages. This is why our spoken and written words are the lifeline of our culture. The tragedy of separation of two Koreas degraded our tongue and the pollution of language has been eroding our collective spirit and threatening our future as one people.

On that account, to work jointly on the Gyeoremal-keunsajeon is not only to integrate and compile our words but also to expand the width and depth of our cultural community and to prepare for reunification and forward.
